August meeting

The August meeting will be Thursday, August 5th from 6 to 8pm, in the Bigwoofs Technology Classroom, next to The Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies on Smoky Bay Way.

Our topic will be “Free Software,” with demonstrations of some of the free software packages people use.

If you have free software you use and would like to tell the group about it, please use the contact page to let us know and we’ll make sure to have it on the display computer for the meeting!

Full list of review products available

I have been working hard to get materials for the group to review. Remember, if you check out a product for review and get the review in to me for the website, you will keep the item for yourself! Face it, if you buy a product you will spend the time learning it anyway. So for the effort of doing the writing, you will get the item for virtually nothing (Apple software has a nominal cost of $5.) I have these items in hand right now:

Bento – database management for the home user ($5), list $49 – Apple

Mac OS 10.5, Leopard – full version of the latest operating system, 1 license ($5), list $129 – Apple

The Creative Digital Darkroom - digital photography manual (book), list $49.99 – O’Reilly

GraphicConverter – Photo editing and format converting software, list $44.95 (box version) – Lemkesoft

Take Control e-Books – numerous e-books, choose from these titles, list $10-$15 – TidBITS

We have many more software packages on the way, and I have some I am saving for our May event, where we will have DOOR PRIZES!

We are official!

It’s been 4 months of applications and review, but we are finally a recognized group on Apple’s group finder.  Check out the finder and see our listing.  I’m really excited!  This will give us more credibility in the Mac community.  It may also bring us more members.  Remember to tell all your friends!  You may find out one of your workmates or your neighbors have a Mac at home they are dying to talk about at our monthly meetings.

HOLY COW!!!!

Check out the Apple website.  The MacWorld keynote was delivered about 8AM our time, and the webpage was already updated.  My suspicions were correct on possible product releases in some cases.  I see 3 new products worth mention.  I’m not going to spoil it, see for yourself.

The apples have fallen!
